🔥 BUTT FUSION (ASTM F2620)
Used to join HDPE pipe-to-pipe and pipe-to-fitting end-to-end. Pipe ends are faced, heated against a hot plate, then pressed together until cool.

FUSION FORCE FORMULA
Fusion Force (lbs) = IFP × Pipe Area (AP) + Drag Pressure
where IFP = Interfacial Pressure (60–90 psi), AP = pipe cross-sectional area
VISUAL INSPECTION (PASS / FAIL)
✅ ACCEPTABLE: Proper double rollback bead · uniform shape both sides · beads contact pipe surface · no gaps or voids · misalignment < 10% pipe OD
❌ REJECT: V-groove between beads · bead too small (cold fusion) · bead too large (over-pressured) · misaligned over 10% OD · concave melt · contamination visible
🔌 SOCKET FUSION (ASTM F2620)
For small-diameter pipe to socket fittings: 1/2" CTS through 4" IPS. Pipe and fitting both heated simultaneously on a heating tool, then pushed together.

PROCEDURE
1. Cut pipe square · clean ends with cotton cloth
2. Place cold ring on pipe at correct insertion depth
3. Insert pipe and fitting onto heating tool simultaneously
4. Heat for time per chart above (no force during heat)
5. Quickly remove both from heater, push pipe straight into fitting until cold ring meets fitting
6. Hold without movement for cool time on tool
7. Remove cold ring after additional 30 sec
⚡ ELECTROFUSION (ASTM F1055)
Fitting has an embedded resistance coil. Electrofusion processor reads barcode on fitting → applies preset current/time → coil melts polyethylene around joint. Used for repairs, tight spaces, dissimilar pipes, and where butt fusion equipment can't fit.

PROCEDURE
1. Mark insertion depth on pipe (per fitting size)
2. SCRAPE the OD to remove oxide layer (mechanical scraper, not knife) — full circumference, not just spots
3. Clean with isopropyl alcohol wipe — DO NOT touch scraped surface after cleaning
4. Slide fitting on, align both pipes, install clamp to hold position (no movement during/after fusion)
5. Connect leads · scan barcode · processor sets time/voltage automatically
6. Cool fully per fitting label BEFORE removing clamps
7. Inspect indicator pins — both should be raised after successful fusion

📋 Operator Qualification: Per 49 CFR 192.285 (gas) and various state water utility codes, all heat-fusion operators on PE gas distribution piping must be qualified per a documented procedure. Most US utilities reference ASTM F2620 + manufacturer specs. Maintain training records.
🌡️ Cold weather (< 40 °F): Provide windbreaks · pre-warm pipe ends · allow extended heat soak · longer cool times. Sub-freezing? Tent and heat the work area.
